Too Much Punch For Judy Essay The play we have been studying is called Too Much Punch For Judy. It is about two sisters who go out drinking and both get drunk. They have to decide who will drive home, Judy decides she should as she has not drunk as much and if they get aught Joanne will lose her licence. So they get in the car, and suddenly Judy loses control and they rash. Judy is OK, but Joanne is dead. Then the story explores how Judy might cope with life after that horrible night. In our lessons we took pieces of the play, and acted them out using different techniques, such as frozen images, abstract and form theatre.  In one lesson we used frozen images to show how attitudes towards alcohol progress. The sketches show how we were stood, and the numbers of the scene.  Ã‚  In this scene are me and Sabrina leaning on a double height rostra, drinking and laughing. In this we are in a having a laugh situation with the alcohol.  2. In this scene are Harry and Tara driving a car while drunk. In this they are using chairs as car seats. They are about to crash and at this point the serious consequences of alcohol start to show. We showed this by walking in a drunken manner. While we were walking to the car we were talking rubbish about a fit guy. Then when we reached the car we argued about who would drive, then I tried to open the door with the wrong key, and let (Rosalia) Judy drive. Then I walked around the car drunk and kicked it. We both got in and I found some alcohol, and then said Thank God for that, about the bottle. Then as (Rosalia) Judy turned the car on she said Look at you, its a good thing Im driving. Then she cant start the car as she misses the keyhole. The point at which we marked the moment was when Rosalia said Look at you, its a good thing Im driving. What we did was freeze, as she was about to say it, just after I say about the bottle I find. Then while we were frozen she says it, and then we carry on. Marking the moment meant it showed the audience that something was about to happen, and therefore adds tension by the way Rosalia says her line in a drunken manner. It is also ironic, as it is not a good thing that shes driving.  This exercise helped me understand the play more, as it showed what can happen from a tiny misjudgement. In another lesson we used Emotion exercises to really show the emotions of our characters. In my group were Sarah and Holly, and we were given number three. This meant that we had to perform a scene where there are three friends, where two betray the other one.  In this me and Holly basically tease Sarah about her wetting the bed, after she told me not to tell anyone about her secret. In this I used two main facial expressions, and a happy laughing one when before we see Sarah and I tell Holly the secret, then again after we tease her. The other facial expression is a faking upset not guilty look, which I used when Sarah asked me if I had said anything. I also used my body language, one way was a huddled up, giggly manner when I was talking to Holly. In his various works, Nathaniel Hawthorne addresses the religious themes dominant in colonial Puritan society. For example, the beloved Mr. Hooper of Hawthorne’s parable The Minister’s Black Veil dons a black veil, a mysterious change which the Puritans believed â€Å"could portend nothing but evil† (Hawthorne 630). As a result, the Puritans isolate their minister. Even though the parable does show the Puritans’ harsh and superstitious reaction to the vagary of the minister, the veil itself symbolizes both the minister’s isolation from society and his connection to society through original sin. This veil and other symbols in Hawthorne’s works illustrate the universal truth that â€Å"all art is paradox.† Hawthorne approaches this notion in his novel The Scarlet Letter by placing contradictions at the heart of his art. The female protagonist, Hester Prynne, bears the societal burdens of adultery as she wears the scarlet letter â€Å"A. † Because of her suffering and struggle to find her place in society, Hester Prynne eventually receives redemption. However, Hester’s crime alters the lives of two others: Minister Dimmesdale and the physician Chillingworth, who both seek salvation, and by the end of the novel, all three redeem themselves. Nonetheless, the three would not have redeemed themselves had they not sinned. Through the contradictions of the true Christian model and his characters’ personalities, Hawthorne reveals that redemption is still possible even after one falls. Nathaniel Hawthorne paradoxically depicts Hester Prynne as the Christian model even though she is considered immoral. The story’s plot (if there is any) was light. It was just about a guy (Manong) who took care of a bull and eventually met a girl (Aning) on the road. It was obvious that Manong was attracted to Aning mainly because of her figure, â€Å"The underpart of her arm is while and smooth†¦And her hair is thick and black.† The bull in the story served as a connection of the two persons. It was like in Chekhov’s â€Å"The Lady with the Pet Dog† (I just realized that I often cite this story in my commentaries. What can I do? I love this story). When Manong was having a meal with the bull on his side, he found the girl fetching water on the well and it was obvious that Manong grew â€Å"conscious† in her presence which leads to the idea that he likes the girl. But on my reading, he just likes the girl due to impulsiveness – physical attraction. His noticeable thoughts of the girl’s â€Å"breast† was the proof that he was just another normal guy who does this thing. Oh, I’m sounding crappy. Their conversation when they talked about their meals made their official connection toward each other (the one Aning confessed that her meal were just rice and salt), â€Å"They laughed and felt more at ease and regarded each other more openly† and â€Å"the while he gazed up at her and smiled for no reason.† And when the bucket of water fell they started teasingly blaming themselves. Manong volunteered to fill the empty buket with water because he thought that he was â€Å"stronger† than her (I found a sexist tone in this part though). Anyway, when Aning offered him to drink water from his fetched bucket he seemed to be more â€Å"conscious† than ever, â€Å"A chuckling sound persisted in forming inside his throat at every shallow. It made him self-conscious. He was breathless when though, and red in the face.† Aning also offered Manong to stay in their house foor some shade and to have some rest. Of course, Aning mentioned the â€Å"bull† to at least express a reason for the offer (a very common technique. Lol.) But I stopped when I read the line, â€Å"We have no neighbors.† I thought that the ending of the story was somewhat mysterious but it came to tme that maybe I was just over reacting about this one. Anyway, back to the issue, I think there was a great possibility of them being lovers. The closing lines though made me feel a creepy feeling, â€Å"He felt strong. He felt that he could follow the slender, lithe figure ahead of him to the ends of the world.† It felt awkward.

Social Security contributions can be as high as 22.57% of the payroll salary. Worker’s housing contributions are 5% of the payroll salary (Abogados, 2008). The basis for severance payments for termination cases is the actual daily salary of the employee. Salary can consist of any type of bonus, commissions, and any other payment that provides additional economic benefit and may include cars or club fees. To calculate the severance compensation, divide the total of all these services in the last calendar year by 365 or the actual period worked in the year. Severance payments are also dependent upon the type of termination (Abogados, 2008). The three types of termination are termination with fair cause, termination without fair cause, and termination by mutual agreement. Termination without fair cause allows the employee to collect three month’s salary, 20 days of  additional salary for each year of employment, a seniority premium equal to 12 days for every year of employment, prorated vacation, annual bonus, and profit sharing for the year of termination. This process was kept in darkness for 15 min at 370C. After that, the Bodipy solution was removed and the cells were then washed by Binding buffer from Annexin V Floustaining kit (Roche, IN, USA). Finally, the cells were incubated in 100  Ã‚ ­l/ml of Propidium iodide (PI) for 10 min in darkness. Exposition of TG accumulation and apoptosis was observed at excitation of 488 and 543 nm, and emission of BP 505-530 and LP 650 nm on Carl Zeiss Confocal Microscopy (LSM 510 meta, Carl Zeiss., Jena, Germany), respectively. Data analysis All results were expressed as mean of repeated three or four values  ± SEM. The difference between groups was identified by using t.test. p < 0.05 was considered statistical significant.

The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter Essay -- American History

The film titled, â€Å"The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter†, looks at the roles of women during and after World War II within the U.S. The film interviews five women who had experienced the World War II effects in the U.S, two who were Caucasian and three who were African American. These five women, who were among the millions of women recruited into skilled male-oriented jobs during World War II, shared insight into how women were treated, viewed and mainly controlled. Along with the interviews are clips from U.S. government propaganda films, news reports from the media, March of Time films, and newspaper stories, all depicting how women are to take "the men’s" places to keep up with industrial production, while reassured that their duties were fulfilling the patriotic and feminine role. After the war the government and media had changed their message as women were to resume the role of the housewife, maid and mother to stay out of the way of returning soldiers. Thus the patriotic and feminine role was nothing but a mystified tactic the government used to maintain the American economic structure during the world war period. It is the contention of this paper to explore how several groups of women were treated as mindless individuals that could be controlled and disposed of through the government arranging social institutions, media manipulation and propaganda, and assumptions behind women’s tendencies which forced â€Å"Rosie the Riveter† to become a male dominated concept. Since the war began women were led to believe that they were the ones who had to be the patriotic sacrifice until the men came home from war. The film reveals how the government used the media to alternately urge women to give up such elements of their feminin... ...owards more love stories. Essentially more forms of propaganda ensued to let women know what they should be doing. More domestic jobs became available such as being a maid, restaurant work, dishwashing and cleaning. However women who worked war jobs wanted their own maids now so they could pursue their own dreams. They felt inspired and accomplished. Lola Wiexl mentioned that although skills within the workforce were easily learned, within the household traditions still persisted. Lola herself said she'd go home cook, clean and do the laundry while her brother laid on the couch. She didn't question it before but she was angry about it for years after her war time experience. Thus patriarchal hegemonies still existed after the war and were perpetuated by the government and media as much as possible to solicit women who participated in activities outside of the home.

Character Sketch Example: Mirror Image

The story â€Å"Mirror Image† by Lena Coakley is about the character Alice trying to find her true self in the midst of an identity crisis. The character’s struggle was caused when she and her dad had an accident where she made it but her dad didn’t. But the thing is, her body didn’t quite make it too. So they had to do a brain transplant. Now Alice is considered as a new person by her sister but she is in denial with it. Her twin sister Jenny is also quite upset and feels she is but a stranger to their home. Having a new body, she described her appearance in the story. On her new body, she seems to be slim and more mature than her old body. It is proved when she said there were no cellulites on her thighs which are fats found in thighs and buttocks. Also, she said her body weighed much more than her old body meaning her new body is more mature . Another trait indicated in the story was she had clean and pretty face. On the story, Alice said that no one told her that she was ugly and her face never had zits on it. Lastly she had big brown eyes. In the hospital when she’s in bed and got her body, when she looked into the mirror, she saw an unfamiliar face, her face with big brown eyes. Alice can be described as an adaptive person. She learned to adapt to her new body and to her new friends, new environment. Alice is also a proud person. She keeps boasting about her new features compared to old body. Alice is also confident. Since she got her body replaced she decided to join cheerleading. And she had the confidence that Alice and her family will get through this struggle of hers. In the story, the character focused on finding herself. Her motivation was to prove what’s inside that body of hers is the same Alice they know and used to be with. Evidence is that her sister won’t let her read her diary for a reason that Jenny is no longer comfortable being with her and looks at her as a stranger to their house. Also, it is on the part where she tasted the cake and her taste buds didn’t like it. She wants to prove that the chocolate with mocha cream cake that her mother made for her was still her favourite cake even after the body change. Lastly, Alice wants to show that what Mr. Jarred saw and talked to was not her daughter Gail, but a different person, her accent, the way she walks and even when he looked into her eyes. If brain transplant were ever possible, anyone may be in a position like Alice where she had to go find her true self lost in the midst of an identity crisis. It may be hard but the character was able to adapt to her new body, following the consequences that her sister sees her as a stranger and unsure about her having a new body.
